Description

What does this plugin do?

The Dev Media Fallback plugin helps developers and agencies save time, disk space, and headaches when working on development or staging WordPress sites.

Instead of duplicating your entire uploads folder, this plugin allows your dev or staging site to dynamically reference media files from your live site whenever a file is missing locally.

It works automatically for:

  • Images and media loaded via WordPress functions (wp_get_attachment_url)

  • Media embedded directly in posts and pages (the_content)

  • Common Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) types such as text, textarea, and WYSIWYG

Before using a live site URL, the plugin checks if the file exists locally. If it does, it uses the local file. If not, it falls back to the live site. This ensures your dev/staging site stays fully functional without duplicating large media libraries.

An admin notice keeps you informed whenever the plugin is active, so you never forget it’s running.

What does it cost?

This plugin is free.

Install

  • Download the ZIP file.

  • Unzip it and upload the contained folder to your WordPress wp-content/plugins directory.

  • Log in to your WordPress site and activate the plugin via the Plugins page.

How to Use

  1. Navigate to Settings → Dev Media Fallback.

  2. Enter the Live Site URL (the URL of your production site where media is stored).

  3. Check Enable Fallback to turn the plugin on.

  4. Save your settings.

Once enabled, missing media files on your dev/staging site will automatically load from your live site, keeping everything functional without duplicating uploads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this overwrite any local files?
A: No. The plugin only uses the live site URL if the file is missing locally. Local files are always prioritized.

Q: Does it work with Gutenberg blocks?
A: Yes! As long as the media URLs point to your uploads folder, the plugin will handle them.

Q: Can I disable it temporarily?
A: Absolutely. Simply uncheck Enable Fallback in the settings page and save.

Q: Is it safe for production sites?
A: This plugin is intended for development or staging environments. Using it on production isn’t necessary since the files already exist there.
